Can I Get By In Germany And Hong Kong With English Only?

Educated Germans and people in Hong Kong can speak English, should I be able to get by? English is the official language in Hong Kong along with Catonese.

I presume the answer would be Yes for Hong Kong. However Germany could be difficult unless you stick to tourist places in the large cities. However Germany does not depend on tourism for its economy, so you won’t find people falling all over themselves to speak your language. I suggest you try to learn a bit of basic German, and be apologetic about your inability to communicate well.
The “universality” of the English language is somewhat exaggerated.

In Germany, you can get along, but it’s polite to say “Sprechen sie deutsch?” (they generally speak English to you to answer the question, too) instead of just directly speaking English to them. Whenever I made an effort to speak any German to them, it was greatly appreciated. It might be helpful to bring a phrasebook, too, since menus are generally in German, and it’s nice to know what you’re getting. Additionally, train signs, maps, etc. are in German. I only met 3 or 4 Germans who couldn’t speak English at all, and they were in the little Bavarian villages south of Munich. By the way, I highly recommend that area! It’s incredibly beautiful.
As for Hong Kong, I’ve heard you can, but I haven’t been there and I’m not 100%. Try going to http://www.virtualtourist.com and checking out the Hong Kong page. The site has really good info from real travelers about crime, scams, good/bad places to spend your money, etc. I’ve found it very helpful everywhere I’ve gone!

I don’t know about Hong Kong.
But you can get by in Germany. More or less. But it will be neither easy nor will it be fun. It’ll be ok for a short visit. But don’t plan to stay there if you’re not prepaid to learn the language.
