Excellent service and good quality food. I ate at Cafe Causette and had dessert at the Mandarin Oriental Cake Shop afterwards. Both were good, with the Cake Shop being more special. I will definitely go back for tea for day though. The Mandarin Oriental is a classy hotel and one of my favourites in Hong Kong.

The best afternoon tea in town!

Fabulous hotel

I have recently returned from Hong Kong where I spent 5 days with a girlfriend who like me is a shopaholic. I had booked the Mandarin Oriental hotel based on reports on Tripadvisor and also for its proximity to good shopping and eating options. It is connected by walkways to the IFC mall, Princes building and Landmark mall and is a quick walk to Pedder St, the Chater building and the metro. I arrived at 7.30am after an 11 hour flight and had no expectations that our room would be available. It wasn’t ,but for the first time in any hotel, I was offered an alternative room for showering and a change of clothes. By the time I had freshened up, the room was available and my bags were transferred without any difficulty. We had a harbour-view room which true to its description, had a panoramic view over the harbour and across to Kowloon. A great spot to watch some of the nightly light show. The beds were very comfortable and there was an extensive choice of pillows. The bathroom had every mod-con imaginable including a TV built into the mirror, an extensive range of toiletries and thick fluffy towels. The desk has connections for every type of electronic equipment. The morning paper is delivered directly into your valet box to avoid disturbing you. We ate at Pierre, Man Wah, the Clipper lounge (breakfast) and had room service – all of the highest quality. The restaurants on the 25th floor have the added advantage of fabulous views over the harbour. The level of service and quality of food at Pierre is some of the best I have experienced anywhere in the world. My only gripe was the presence of smokers in the M bar which meant we turned on our heels and left. In fact we discovered it was hard to find a bar in Hong Kong that was not blanketed in a haze of cigarette smoke. The front desk staff at the MO were outstanding – nothing was too much trouble, even extending our check-out to 4pm with no additional charge. We didn’t use the Spa but plan to spend some time there on our next visit. My friend and I both used the Airport Express train to get into Hong Kong from the airport. The HK station is very close to the MO Hotel but access is not immediately obvious. I was directed out onto the street and pointed in the direction of the hotel. However, there is no easy way to cross Connaught road without using an overbridges. Lugging a heavy case up and down the stairs in a bit of mission. I would recommend you either get a taxi for the short ride (HK$33) or take the elevator in the station to P1 level in the IFC mall (all in the same building) and then walk to the MO using the overbridges. Then all you need to do is walk down the stairs and 1 block to the hotel. I would totally recommend the MO Hotel. We will be back next year for the next installment of our annual girls shopping holiday.
